Hooray for July Good Beer Month!

Now in its seventh year, July Good Beer Month is a month-long celebration of the local craft scene. Each July brewers, distributors, and publicans gather to celebrate with the beer drinking community. And, what a year it's been. From Brooklyn Brewery announcing expansion plans on Staten Island to local favorite Other Half beginning to gain national attention, just scratches the surface of all the good beer we have to be thankful for in the Big Apple.

Chock-full of events and panels, July Good Beer Month has a multitude of must-go-to events. Just last weekend, I went to the Running With The Beef, a celebration of Spanish-inspired foods paired with beers from local brewery Sixpoint and beers from Spain.

One of my personal favorite events, are the Craft Beer Jams, a series of tastings and panels on beer that are produced with local public radio station WNYC at the Greene Space in Manhattan. There is one more left this coming Wednesday and the subject matter is about pairing beer with dessert and is called Desserts on Tap. The panel, led by Jimmy Carbone, features Basil Lee of Finback Brewery; Claire Paparazzo, sommelier of Dirty French; Ben Keene, Managing Editor of  Beer Advocate; and Daniel Sklaar, owner of Fine and Raw Chocolate. It's always reassuring to see this in the window of a beer bar in the area.

July Good Beer Month is put on by The Good Beer Seal, an advocacy group that yearly bestows the Good Beer Seal Award to local establishments who focus on craft, cleanliness, and community and have additionally been open for business at least one year. Co-founded by Jimmy Carbone (Jimmy's No. 43) the late Ray Deter (dba) Ben & Mike Wiley (Bar Great Harry, The Owl Farm, Mission Dolores, and Glorietta Baldy), Gary Gillis (Burp Castle, Standings), and Dave Brodrick (Blind Tiger), it "exists to identify bars offering an intriguing selection of craft beer in a unique atmosphere created by owner/operators who exhibit a deep commitment not only to the promotion of craft beer but to their community as well." according to press notes. Full disclosure: I have been asked to take part in this year's nominating process; an honor and responsibility that I do not take lightly.

A full list of the remainder of this year's events and activities can be found here. I hope to see you at one of them and raise a glass to July Good Beer Month!
